Inlandsbanan
Sweden's most scenic railway — 1,300 km through wilderness to the Arctic Circle
The Journey of a Lifetime
Inlandsbanan is one of Europe's great railway adventures — a 1,300 km journey through Sweden's untouched wilderness, from Mora in Dalarna all the way to Gällivare above the Arctic Circle.
This historic railway takes you through landscapes few tourists ever see: endless boreal forests, pristine lakes, and remote villages where traditional Swedish culture thrives. The train crosses the Arctic Circle and passes through the UNESCO-listed Laponian area, home to the indigenous Sami people and their ancient reindeer herding traditions.
Departing from Mora
Muntergården is perfectly positioned for your Inlandsbanan adventure. The train departs from Mora, just 10 km from our doorstep. Stay with us the night before your journey, enjoy a hearty Swedish breakfast, and we can help arrange your transfer to the station.
What Makes It Special
Unlike ordinary train travel, Inlandsbanan is designed for discovery:
- Knowledgeable train hosts: Commentary in Swedish and English about the places and wildlife you pass
- Food stops: The train pauses at local restaurants for authentic regional cuisine
- Photo breaks: Regular stops at scenic viewpoints
- Wildlife spotting: Keep your eyes open for reindeer, moose, and even bears
- Midnight sun: Travel in summer and experience 24-hour daylight above the Arctic Circle
Wildlife Along the Route
The railway passes through some of Sweden's most wildlife-rich areas. The train hosts will alert you to sightings, and it's common to see:
- Reindeer — especially in the northern sections
- Moose — often spotted near wetlands and forest edges
- Birds of prey — including eagles and owls
- With luck: bears, wolves, lynx, and wolverines inhabit these forests
Journey Options
You can travel the entire line or choose shorter sections:
- Mora – Östersund: A day trip through central Sweden
- Östersund – Gällivare: The Arctic adventure continues north
- Full journey: Mora to Gällivare with overnight stops along the way
- Two-week pass: Hop on and off as you please
Sami Culture & Arctic Circle
The northern sections take you into Sami territory, where you'll encounter one of Europe's oldest living cultures. The train makes a ceremonial stop at the Arctic Circle marker near Jokkmokk — a perfect photo opportunity and a moment to appreciate just how far north you've traveled.
