Falu Gruva
A UNESCO World Heritage copper mine that shaped Sweden's history for over 1,000 years
Journey Into Sweden's Mining Heritage
Descend 67 meters underground into one of the world's most historically significant mines. Falu Gruva was the world's most important mine during the 17th century, funding Sweden's rise as a great European power.
For over a millennium, this copper mine produced two-thirds of Europe's copper needs. The wealth from Falu Gruva financed Sweden's wars, built castles, and transformed the nation into a major European power. Today, this extraordinary industrial heritage is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Underground Mine Tours
The highlight of any visit is the guided underground tour. Descend into the mine through winding tunnels, past colorful mineral formations, and through chambers where miners worked in harsh conditions for centuries. The temperature underground stays at a cool 5°C year-round — bring warm clothing!
Tours last approximately one hour and take you through the fascinating history of mining technology, from hand-dug tunnels to industrial-scale operations. You'll learn about the famous "Great Pit" collapse of 1687, which created the massive open pit visible today.
The Story of Falu Red
Ever wondered why so many Swedish houses are painted red? The answer lies here. Falu rödfärg (Falu red paint) has been produced from mine by-products for over 500 years. This iconic paint, made from copper-rich earth, became the defining color of Swedish rural architecture.
At the mine, you can visit the paint factory and learn how this traditional paint is still made using the same methods. The characteristic red cottages and barns you'll see throughout Dalarna — including many near Muntergården — owe their color to this very mine.
Museum & Visitor Center
The above-ground museum brings the mine's history to life with interactive exhibits, artifacts, and stories of the people who worked here. Learn about the engineering innovations, the dangerous working conditions, and the mine's impact on world history.
