Hansjö Mejeri
Award-winning artisan cheese from a family dairy using organic milk from the farm next door
From Farm to Cheese
Hansjö Mejeri, just outside Orsa, is a flourishing Dalarna dairy founded in 2006. Despite its relative youth, the dairy has become known for its award-winning cheeses. With small-scale, artisan production, they make white and blue mold cheeses, hard cheese, grilling cheese, sour cream, and yogurt.
Every month, they make cheese, milk, sour cream, and yogurt from approximately 3,600 liters of milk collected from Johan Daniels' farm just 200 meters from the dairy. The milk comes from the family's own herd of about 100 cows, making this a true farm-to-table experience.
Award-Winning Quality
Hansjö Gulla cheese has been honored at various cheese events. The gold medal at Nordic Artisan Food Awards (Nordic Championships) 2022 is the most prestigious. This recognition puts Hansjö Mejeri among the finest artisan dairies in Scandinavia.
Hansjö Mejeri works with organic and KRAV-certified cow's milk from the farm. The cheeses are made from low-pasteurized milk that is neither standardized nor homogenized. The production is artisanal and small-scale.
A Family Story
The dairy was founded by Kent Daniels and Anita Boman Daniels to complement their dairy farm. Björn Daniels, the second-generation cheesemaker, now runs Hansjö Mejeri together with his wife Nicolina.
Brothers Johan and Björn Daniels run the dairy farm and cheese dairy in Dalarna. They're currently featured in the TV series "Svenska Bönder" (Swedish Farmers) where they show what life as a farmer is really like.
The Self-Service Farm Shop
The self-service shop at the dairy has become a local institution. Open daily from 10:00 to 19:00, payment is by Swish. They sell their own cheese products and "Orsamjölk," along with other artisan foods from small-scale producers in the region.
The village of Hansjö has become a real tourist magnet. Year-round, tourists traveling north or south gladly stop in. A visit to Hansjö Mejeri or Hansjö Lanthandel is a must, and during summer, attractions expand with Glasskapellet ice cream and Solsyrans vegetable farm.
