Carl Larsson-gården

Step into the colorful world of Sweden's most beloved artist

A Living Work of Art

In the small village of Sundborn, 13 km from Falun, sits "Lilla Hyttnäs" — the home that Carl Larsson and his wife Karin transformed into a masterpiece that would define Swedish interior design for generations.

Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is one of Sweden's most beloved artists, famous for his watercolor paintings depicting idyllic family life. But his greatest work may be his home itself — a light-filled, colorful space that broke with the dark Victorian interiors of the era and created a new vision of how Swedish homes could look and feel.

The House & Garden

Walking through Carl Larsson-gården feels like stepping into one of his paintings. The bright colors, hand-painted furniture, and personal touches remain exactly as they were when the family lived here. Karin Larsson's textile designs and furniture are displayed throughout, showing her equal contribution to the home's artistic vision.

The garden, restored to its original appearance, explodes with flowers in summer. French-inspired vegetable beds, unique garden furniture, and cozy corners create the outdoor spaces familiar from Carl's paintings.

Guided Tours

Access to the house is by guided tour only, allowing small groups to experience the intimate spaces while learning about the family's extraordinary life. Tours run in Swedish and English, with special children's tours during summer. The adjacent art gallery Konsthallen Kvarnen hosts related exhibitions.
